THE SMALL CITY BOOK SHOP

Project Overview

Mackay Carpentry was commissioned to carry out the full interior fit-out of Small City Bookshop, an independent bookseller based in central Bristol. The client wanted to create a warm, welcoming space that combined practicality with personality, balancing high-capacity shelving with comfortable browsing areas.

We worked closely with the owners to shape the layout and aesthetic, delivering a complete fit-out from the ground up. The result is a functional and characterful retail environment designed to support daily operations while reflecting the bookshop’s creative ethos.

Key Deliverables

Bespoke Timber Shelving & Display Units

We designed and built custom shelving to maximise wall space and stock capacity, with fixed and freestanding units tailored to the layout. All joinery was built in-house to match the client’s material and finish preferences.

Service Counter & Fixtures

A bespoke timber counter was fabricated and installed, providing a practical and visually cohesive focal point for the shop floor. We also fitted integrated display areas and storage for stock and supplies.

Flooring & Decorative Finishes

We supplied and installed new flooring throughout, along with painting and decorative finishes that aligned with the shop’s branding and interior concept.

Electrical & Lighting Works

Lighting was upgraded to suit the new layout, including overhead and feature lighting to support both ambience and retail visibility. All electrical modifications were completed to regulation standards.

Staff Areas & Kitchenette

Back-of-house spaces were fitted out with a compact kitchenette, storage, and workspace to support day-to-day operations.

Project Coordination

We managed all works on-site and coordinated with the client to ensure smooth delivery. The shop remained closed during the fit-out, allowing for uninterrupted progress and a clean handover.
